Because it seems like forever since I've done one of these. Pinched from the lovely [livejournal.com profile] lyras .

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I'll give you either:

(a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon,
(b) a reason he/she sucks,
(c) a reason he/she is awesomecakes,
(d) five things that never happened to that character, or
(e) five people that character never fell in love with and why.

You pick the character. I pick the letter.

My fandoms: Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wheel of Time, Vorkosigan Saga, Dorothy L. Sayers, Mina de Malfois, anything else you think I might know and could be drawn out on.

I've been tagging old entries in this journal, and was dismayed to find that that Meme tag is a lot bigger than any of the others.

"How embarrassing!" I thought. "This is meant to be a thoughtful and sophisticated kind of journal. I must stay away from memes, and concentrate on more interesting content."

So... here's another meme. Nicked from [personal profile] perosha

Pick your 6 favourite fandoms and answer the questions (don't look at the questions before):
1. Sherlock Holmes
2. Harry Potter
3. Star Trek: Enterprise
4. The Archers
5. Lord of the Rings
6.
女子特警队 (Women's Armed Police Squad - a Chinese army soap opera which charts the military career of six young girls from Sichuan who join the elite Armed Police Squad and have adventures, while at the same time learning to be a better person, a responsible citizen and a good Communist). Yes, I know this is an eccentric choice, but I thought it was time for something different...

Not that I'm actually being particularly hard done by at present, just that I don't want to work, and have to, and I'm ready to burst with irritation at it all. So help me take my mind off things by giving me stuff to talk about! You will be doing society a favour.

Give me a name from any of my fandoms, and I will give you three facts from my personal canon about them.

My fandoms are Harry Potter, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Next Generation, The Archers, Lord of the Rings, and Wheel of Time. (I am also a fan of quite a few other things, but I don't have personal canons on them, either because the writer wouldn't approve, or because they are just too good, or both).

Because it's doing the rounds, and it looks like fun.

Name a character from one of my fandoms and I'll give you (a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon, (b) a reason I dislike him/her, (c) a reason she/he is brilliant, (d) five things that never happened to that character or (e) five people that character never fell in love with and why. You pick the character. I pick the letter.

Fandoms: Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Next Generation, Wheel of Time, The Archers

I loved the book, but it's been a bad year for my fanfic.

Last time I at least guessed the identity of the Half-Blood Prince correctly (even if I meant it as a joke and deliberately chose the silliest person I could find). This year it looks like they were reenacting the Final Battle on my author-page - carnage galore, and a lot of my personal favourites were hardest hit.

(ETA: hem hem! Since LJ won't let me put all this on the LJ cut, if you click on the cut below you will not only be SPOILED on "Deathy Hallows", you will see SPOILERS to my stories too. You have been warned. IN A VERY CAPSLOCK WAY!

So, how has your work been faring? Did you predict something amazing and it came true? Will you be rejigging your stories to make them canon-compliant? Enquiring minds want to know!

dolorous_ett: (Westcoat)

Because it looks like fun.

Name one character from Harry Potter or Star Trek: Enterprise and I will give you three facts about them from my personal canon.

You're more than welcome to mention characters from other fandoms, but I may not have any personal canon on which to draw (GRRM's work, for example, I leave strictly alone in that sense).

dolorous_ett: (illogical)
In honour of April Fool's Day.

I seem to have woken up without the imagination to put up a whole April Fool's post claiming something crazy - though there seem to be some quite good and funny ones around.

But give me a really nutty theory and I will happily leap in to defend it, saying that it is OMGsocanon and swearing that anyone who doesn't believe it is TEH EVUL.

So bring me your daft theories and I will do my best to give you the validation you've been craving all the other 364 days of the year!
dolorous_ett: (illogical)

I pinched yet another from [profile] gunderpants.

Give me the title of one of my own fics and a timestamp -- either a future moment in time after the story's conclusion, or sometime in the past before the story started, and I'll tell you what happened. For example, you could choose a timestamp of five minutes before the story began, or a timestamp of ten years in the future.

I'll even settle for something in the middle of one of my stories.

My fics can be found here.

dolorous_ett: (O RLY)

In a rather hopeless effort to prove that I am not always a terminally grumpy old sourpuss who angsts about everything, I've stolen the Character Love Meme from [personal profile] lyras.

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I will write no more than 100 words on why I love them.

So - name your characters! Fandoms: Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire, Star Trek: Next Generation, Star Trek: Enterprise, Robin Hobb's Farseer and Golden Fool series, Alastair Reynolds's Revelation Space quartet, (a lot of, but not all) Terry Pratchett, Lord of the Rings, Mina de Malfois.

No reasonable (or unreasonable) offer refused...

dolorous_ett: (O RLY)
Well, that didn't take me long, did it? Like everyone who swears they're out of fandom (be it only for a few days), give me a chance to play with the things I like and I'm in there like a rat up a drainpipe.

Though fair's fair, I've worked for this: I haven't punched anybody's face all day.

I pinched this from [personal profile] a_t_rain. The idea is that you write down ten things that you know aren't canon, but you invented and you like anyway. Here are mine. Cut for length.

I'd commend this to anyone who's written fic, or is thinking about it - it's great fun.

Well, I've finally nerved myself to watch the last episode of Enterprise. Oh dear oh dear oh dear.

The premature axing of a TV series is never an occasion for self-congratulation, but was it really necessary to make the last episode ever so rubbish just to justify that decision?

Of course, the characters still exist in our heads. And in the Mirror Universe of my mind, the series is going from strength to strength. Highlights of Series 5-7 include:

Do you have any favourite episodes from Series 5-7?

Recently returned from the barbaric, lager-drinking South of England, and too knackered to do the travelogue I had been planning, and/or a review of the Unsatisfactory Vampire Novel (aka The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (sp?)) which I read on the train.

So, in the meantime, here is a nice meme I gacked from [personal profile] ignipes:

1. Make a list of 15 characters first, and keep it to yourself for the moment. (That way you're not leading the questions asked to fit the characters.)

2. Ask your flist to post questions in the comments. For example: "4, 6, 12 & 15 are starting a band together, what is their name and what kind of music do they play? Also, who's the lead singer, and what instruments do the others play?"

3. After your flist has asked enough questions, round them up and answer them using the 15 characters you selected beforehand, and then post them.

More when I've woken up a bit.

Happy April Fool's Day, folks. Have a good day, and try to not magic anyone upside down...

Now, it has come to my attention that some people round here have been indulging in a passtime known as "Shipping Wars". Worse, some people are being discriminated again for favouring batshit insane non-traditionally logical ships. Colleagues, what are you thinking of? It is the mission of Live Journal to spread peace and love throughout the fandom!

So your mission, if you choose to accept it, is this:

Give me a ship - mainstream or batshit insane non-traditionally logical, one I'm known to dislike, one you think I might enjoy, one even I have probably never thought of... anything goes (that is, anything except child-abuse or incest, about which I have no sense of humour at all). I will find something nice to say about it.

I've been looking over my stock of HP fanfics, and realised something quite surprising.

I barely ever mention Harry Potter! Out of my seven completed fanfics, only in "Furious Wielder of Storms" does he have a speaking part - and that's only a one-liner in which he tells Colin Creevey how brave he is for befriending a Giant!

The funny thing is that I have nothing against Harry whatsoever - I rather like him, especially after Book 6 where he seems a bit more on top of things emotionally. I just never seem to get the urge to put him in my fanfics. And there's not a space for him in my current project either. An ommission I need to rectify in the next story I write, I think.

Does anyone else have things they routinely leave out of their fics - either consciously or otherwise?
____________________

The other ommission is fic reviews. People have been turning out really good stuff lately, and because the past ten days have been so hectic, I haven't had the time to review all of them. But I don't want them to pass unnoticed. I know that if I just go back through my F-list I'll get distracted and miss things - so if you come into this category and read this, can you post me a link to joy my memory?

Many thanks!

Here's a commentary of "The Hall of Heroes", as requested by [livejournal.com profile] saralinda and [livejournal.com profile] aerama.

[Bad username or unknown identity: The original text of "The Hall of Heroes" can be found here.]

Cut for length - every bit as bad as the last, if not worse )

dolorous_ett: (iSnitch)

Here's a commentary on "House of Flying Artichokes", as requested by [livejournal.com profile] a_t_rain, [livejournal.com profile] snorkackcatcher and [livejournal.com profile] aerama. It's rather long, so I've put it under a cut.

The link to the orginal story is here.

Cut for length )

___________

Well, I did warn you it was long. I'll try and make the others a bit shorter.

dolorous_ett: (Default)

I was peripherally involved in discussions about who should get a job today. It was absolutely fascinating - about the people, about my subject and where my place in it is, about how interviews work and about the profoundly misleading nature of first impressions.

Obviously it's all exactly the sort of thing I could never post on LJ - all that confidenitality and what not - a sacking offence if ever I saw one. So I will just have to brood to myself a little longer.

For the same reason, I've not been posting for the last ten days because everyone round here's tired and under stress, and the only things I wanted to write were the sort of things you just don't say about other people in any kind of public domain. I actually got as far as posting one rant - I'm just so relieved that I had the sense to delete it seconds later.

Anyway, to take my mind of the residual work of the term - of which there is much - I've seen the nice Commentary Meme doing the rounds, and really enjoyed reading what I found there, even if I have not replied to every single one. They have inspired me to try a Commentary or two of my own.

Here's a list of my fics so far:

Furious Wielder of Storms - Colin and Luna go for a walk in the Forbidden Forest, and make a discovery that changes their lives. People who think Grawp is just a waste of space – think again. Also contains Ancient Runes, Cho Chang being disinterestedly kind and the advantages of a classical education.
House of Flying Artichokes - The story of a Pureblood dinner from Hell. After a whirlwind romance abroad, Hermione Granger has become engaged to the son of one of Britain's premier pureblood families. Home on leave, she is invited to a dinner at the Malfoys', where a series of unpleasant surprises are waiting for her.... Featuring Surly!Snape, Adult!Crabbe, Blaise!Zabini and the Aggressive Artichoke.
Jewel-Bright - “Floating high above the stadium, the Golden Snitch caught sight of him…the Snitch was in love.” Silly but harmless fluff, a serious Missing Moment from GoF, or a parable of how love, however misplaced, is never truly wasted? You decide! Written for the 2005 FictionAlley Valentine’s Day “What’s Your OOTP?” challenge, in response to the randomly generated sentence: “The Golden Snitch has a massive crush on Bartemius Crouch”.
My Eyes Are Dim, I Cannot See - A young Muggle woman attends her first Wizarding gathering, and is irresistibly drawn to an interesting young man… until her sister decides to take a hand. This is the story of a love cut off before it ever got a chance to exist, and the lives it changed. It is also by way of being an Awful Warning of how much trouble can be caused by romantic, well-meaning people who read far too much into something that just isn’t there. Members of the Militant wing of Wolfstar are advised that they will not find what they are looking for here.
The Hall of Heroes - In which Severus Snape finally gets his just deserts - or does he? Contains mistaken identity, Giants, horned helmets, mead, the Ballad of Severus the Small and His Tiny, Tiny Stick and the final fate of all good Death Eaters.

And just in case those links aren't working, (ETA of course they weren't working), here's a link to my FA homepage.

I won't be doing anything about it today, but I should have something for early next week if there are any takers.
