God, I'm useless. I mean, really, seriously useless. There I was, getting myself all hyped up for Yuletide... and I missed the deadline for application. I didn't even find out it had opened till it was closed, if you know what I mean. OK, there was other stuff going on in my life... but there will always be stuff going on in my life from now on, and I have to get used to it. *kicks self*

Anyway, to divert myself from pointless reproaches, I thought I would just have to see if, with the goodwill of my flist, I can't at least organise a challenge for myself.

Here's the idea - I've put a list of fandoms below the cut, and am hoping some kind readers will offer prompts - even one word will do. I'll try to do as many as I can, though realistically I won't get through them all unless everyone ignores me...

The fandoms I am offering:

Cold Comfort Farm
Wilkie Collins - The Moonstone
Wheel of Time
Vorkosigan Saga
Elizabeth Moon - the Serrano books
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
The Archers
Dalziel & Pascoe
Emma's Diary
Charles Stross's Laundry series
Georgette Heyer: The Grand Sophy, Regency Buck
Lindsey Davis's Falco series
The Gruffalo

Odd crossovers are a speciality of the house - the odder the better!
dolorous_ett: (Seriously?)

I don't know what's the matter with me today. I've had a sudden, overwhelming urge to sign up for [info]springtime_gen.

There are good reasons to do this - not least of which is the fact that I haven't written anything in what feels like forever, and this would at least force me to get something written by the end of March. It would also be a good chance to read some other peoples' fic - I've been shockingly remiss about reading stories by anyone not on my friends-list, and I'm sure I'm missing out on stuff as a result.

Then again, it's a lot of work at one of my fuller times of year. I also didn't have a particularly brilliant time last time I did the challenge - I found the story I was writing strangely uninspiring (probably my fault for not being creative enough), and I don't think the person I wrote it for was that impressed either.

Also, if I do Springtime Gen, when will I get the chance to write either my Life on Mars/Swallows and Amazons fic, or my brand-new Really Bad Idea (a Twilight/Cold Comfort Farm crossover in which Flora Poste turns up in Forks and tries to impose a bit of rationality on the situation)? I'm not sure if this is a strong argument for or against...

Anyway, any thoughts, gentle readers? Are any of you signed up for Springtime Gen? Were my experiences unrepresentative? I've only ever done the one challenge, after all.

dolorous_ett: (Be More Awesome)
Every year I think how wonderful it would be to do NaNoWriMo. I'm convinced I could do it, and it would be marvellous to get the creative juices flowing in a way that's not borrowing someone else's ideas on one level or another. Unfortunately it's the one month of the year when it's completely out of the question for reasons of work. Again. I thought this year might be different, but no...

So I've been wondering if the Yuletide challenge might not be a way round this November blockage. Or would the timing be just as bad?

Does anyone on my friends'-list have any experience of either of these things? Did you enjoy it? Did doing it actually help you write?

I did finish my Peeves-Riddle-Anagrams drabble - with many thanks for the kind help of my more anagram-literate friends.

And then I thought I'd post it here, tidied up a bit... It's now 750 words long, and considerably darker in tone (this always happens when I'm trying to be funny. The same thing's happening to my Hagrid-fic, the first 2 pages of which are really rather sad).

Anyway, for anyone who gives two hoots, here's the new, extended version - also including a tiny, nervous Abraxas Malfoy, a bit more characterisation and a custard pie.

I'm signed up to the [personal profile] mctabby's Sorting Cat Birthday Drabble Challenge  - and I've just found out that I've drawn two characters I don' t like (Tom Riddle and Peeves) and anagrams, for which I have no interest or talent whatsoever.

In fact, I'm so crap at anagrams that I'm reduced to asking for help.

Can anybody tell me any other anagrams (besides the obvious canon one) of Tom Riddle, Tom Marvolo Riddle or any other variants? If you can, I'll be eternally in your debt.

A meme, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] mctabby :

When you see this meme, post a canon sentence in your own journal and invite people to make up another sentence to go with it. Either a sequel or a prequel is fine.

My sentence is:

"I can't," said Malfoy. "It's got to stay put. I just need you to tell me how to do it."

Other news: I'm still overwhelmed by the wondrous recipes people have given me - much appreciated! I will be able to eat a new dish every day for weeks. A bright future beckons - better still, a future containing a balanced diet!

In an attempt to stave off real life for a few more hours, I've joined the [livejournal.com profile] omniocular Challenge - Vernon Dursley and Warrington, anyone?

Anybody still remember my half-written fic for the [livejournal.com profile] perposterice challenge? I doubt it.

The "summery" for which I swore to write a story ran as follows:

This is a story. A teary story in which you'll cry afterwards. You'll be so happy and you'll like it! A story about words and chickens.

The first part of my story can be found here.

It's taken me a long time, but I've just about cobbled together the second part. I'm not happy with some parts, but it's been sitting around on my hard disc too long - it needs to get out in the fresh air and meet people.

That said, any suggestions or concrit would be much appreciated.
