Do your patriotic duty, folks
May. 5th, 2011 10:20 amOtherwise, if you decide you don't like the outcome, you will have nobody to blame but yourself.
This is one of the embarrassing things my Mum tells about me when I was a small child.
What I heard her say was "Come on, Ett, put your coat on, I'm going to make my boat."
So we put on our coats, and off we went to the Big School down the hill. Then she went into a big hall. I had to wait outside. It was a bit boring and I didn't really know what to do with myself, but that was OK because Mummy was making a boat.
When she came out of the polling station empty handed I demanded to know where her boat was. It turned out that Mum was making her vote. It's quite hard to explain the electoral system to a child who isn't yet old enough for primary school. Apparently I made a most terrible fuss.
The moral? I suppose that you should be properly informed before you go to the polls.
There is a serious point to this post, though. Some of you probably consider me a tiresome feminist, a ranting Commie, a pinko liberal or worse (yay!). You're quite entitled to your opinion. But don't you dare come crying to me if the person or party you hate won the elections today because you couldn't be bothered to shift yourself to the nearest polling station. Get out there and make a difference.
As a dedicated supporter of Not-Tory, I have every reason to be cheerful that Michael Howard and his Legions of Terror are stuck in opposition for another five years.
As for positive things about the Labour Party... well, that's always a little bit harder. Though they do exist, if you look carefully.
Still, after waking at 6 from a dream of listening to a radio broadcast announcing a Conservative victory and feeling awful till I rushed to the real radio to make certain... after that nasty moment, to harp on the issues on which we don't see eye to eye would be grudging in the extreme.

Meanwhile in China, the People's Daily website is having no truck with silly negative campaigning or political name-calling, and is concentrating instead on the real issues of today. Here's a sample for you - from today's In Pictures Section.
