Just bits and pieces today. All I have time for, I'm afraid.

I have seen Star Trek, and it's great fun. My personal favourite thing of all was that Scotty had got himself exiled for zapping Porthos from Enterprise into the ether - but I loved lots of it, and time never hung heavy for a moment, even when the plot was a bit daft. It doesn't seem terribly ficcable so far, but I'm still musing on it.

I have a new fandom - unfortunately it's so daft and obscure that to name it would effectively give my RL identity away to anyone who's looking, which is not a good idea in an open post, so I'm not going to do it. But you are most welcome to guess what my new daft and obscure fandom is. I'll write a whole fic for anyone who gets it right!

With a surprising ammount of difficulty, I have finally got hold of Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel's latest. It's 600 odd pages long, about Thomas Cromwell, and absolutely brilliant. I can't praise it enough without sounding gushing and/or creepy, but it might actually be as good as A Place of Greater Safety. I'm going to have to read it again to make sure. The Amazon reviews of this book are a hoot too - a surprising number are all shocked and upset that they've paid hardback prices for something that is most certainly not another Phillippa Gregory clone. Bless.

I also have the latest Charles Stross book - number five in the Merchant Princes series. The Amazon package is going to sit, unopened, on my desk till I finish at least some of the HUGE HEAPS OF WORK that are blighting my life. Until then I'm just going to have to imagine what on earth is going to happen next - judging by the cover it contains both knights in armour and mushroom clouds. Which you don't see every day, to be sure.

For those of you who asked for drabbles, I haven't forgotten, I'm just rather snowed under at the moment. Soon!

I've just come back from a seminar on an attempt to combine 4 very different music styles in one concert - seemed like pointless navel-gazing when I was not-quite-strongarmed into going, but I came out realising that combining unlikely talents can bear surprising fruit. We all need to be reminded of that from time to time, I think.

And following hard on the heels of that last thought, it occurs to me that I spend far too much time treading the same well-worn trails over and over again in all sorts of ways - including my fannish life and my hobbies. I could really do with branching out a little, and I suspect I'm not the only one.

So what are you a fan of that I'm not? Tell why! And if you can spare the time, show me the best entry point for it - I'd love to be converted to something new!

Ages ago I saw a BBC poll about which Star Trek was the real Star Trek. Of course, that is a rather stupid question (which no doubt explains why my favourite version came last by a sizeable margin), but I was thinking about it again recently, and wondering whether I'd get a similar result from readers of this journal.[Poll #1314531][Poll #1314531]

It's been ages since I've read any Harry Potter fanfiction. Which is really quite strange, considering that the whole purpose of this journal was to read and write the stuff.

This is no reflection on this journal, or its friends - I'm getting a lot of fun out of it just the way it is. But then, just occasionally, I get to thinking "Where's all the fanfic? I want to read a story!"

I'm up to my eyes in work, so this may seem a bit of a daft time to ask, but this is definitely one of my I-want-a-story days.

So who do you know that's writing good stuff now? Have you written something yourself, which I have shamefully overlooked? Do you know of older fanfics you think I'd like? I'd love to hear about it.

I'd also like very much to hear about non-HP fics that are in other fandoms that you think I might know.

Nearly my LJ anniversary again - how time flies![Poll #1169563][Poll #1169563]

I started this LJ for Harry Potter fanfic. That was all it was going to be for. It's ended up as a lot more than that - including a sympathetic ear and source of brilliant advice - not to mention contacts with really interesting people. And I'm very happy with it this way.

One thing that's very noticable at the moment, though, is how much non-HP fandom stuff there is on my friends-list. People seem to be marking time until something interesting happens (the film of Book V, perhaps?) - and that includes finding new fandoms to play in.

I don't have a lot of time at the moment, or a telly, so a lot of these new fandoms have rather passed me by. I drop by the journals of good HP writers to read their non-HP stuff from time to time, with varying degrees of enjoyment, but I know I'm missing things.

So I would be very grateful if anyone passing by who's active in something non-HP could spare a few moments to tell me a bit about your other fandoms. Why do you like it? Would you recommend it to everybody? What makes it different from the others? Would I enjoy it?

Thank you!

This is mostly because large parts of my life as it now stands involve sitting around and waiting for things to get started. Nothing worth angsting about, but it's playing hell with my concentration. My story is stymied too - Hagrid's got into a long conversation with the Weasley twins and I'm having problems bringing the conversation to an end and getting them out of the house.

So - to keep things ticking over on my poor journal until something happens - a couple of fairly random questions.

1. Is it cruel to shave a dog in hot weather? (This is a long-running RL argument which I would really like to be able to put to bed once and for all).

2. Do a lot of RL people know about your fanfic habit? (If you're reading this journal at all, I assume you have one - or once did). I'm very much in the closet - my parents have read "Furious Wielder of Storms" and my partner knows because I don't want him thinking I'm conducting a furtive Internet affair - but apart from that, that's it and I have no urge to widen the circle of those in the know. In fact I'd go to some lengths to avoid it. Is this normal?
dolorous_ett: (illogical)

The last week has been a truly spectacular parade of crazy. I've had just about everything, from venal landlords to unfair blacklisting by checking agencies through loopy stuff at work and unwanted guests to my computer breaking down this afternoon (now mercifully fixed, or I wouldn't be writing this...)

Anyway, just when you think life couldn't get any crazier, it does. I have known for a long time that certain sectors of the HP fandom are batshit insane non-conventionally logical, but then I clicked a link to an expose of one Msscribe and the lengths to which she apparently went to acheive Big Name Fan status. And that was half my morning gone. Read it and weep - I've never seen such detail, or such misdirected energy. And plainly the plot is about to thicken: there are still 5 chapters left to go.

On a (hopefully) more pleasant and edifying note, here is a nice meme I picked up from [profile] melusina_hp
1. Ask me one fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff etc. in general.
2. Just one question, please, but it can (and perhaps should) have sub-parts.
3. That's it. It can be as normal or odd as you like.
