dolorous_ett: (HOW?)
I have a sudden urge to cook and eat one, and realise I have no idea how to do the thing properly. Can anyone help?

Failing that, can anybody reccomend any other delicious recipes with a strong chilli element?

Any help much appreciated. Thank you!

... I've just finished reading The Dreaming Void, the new Peter F Hamilton book, and it was great, but now I've run out of books!

Well, not all books in the house, obviously... but I feel like I desperately need a fix of science fiction or fantasy books - the longer the better, a series if such a thing can be had.

Of course, I could reread Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space series or any of his others, but I'm scared of reading them to death. The same goes for the other two Peter F Hamilton series, A Song of Ice and Fire, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, and the more thoughtful Terry Pratchett books...

If I don't think of something soon, I'm going to have to reread the Wheel of Books Time series, and that would just be plain sad.

Any recs? Please?

How do I alter the name that appears in front of my LJ username when commenting, or in the emails that tell you you've had a comment? You know, the one that looks like this:

Some of my friends have done this, to great effect. I'd really like to do it too - I'm in the mood for inventing something equally quirky and witty for myself.

The trouble is, FAQ doesn't say anything about how to do it, and I'm not sure where else to look. Any hints?

ETA: I have the answer! And [livejournal.com profile] theregoesyamum has supplied it! And it was really, really easy! It turned out to be sooooo easy that I was tempted to delete the whole question. But I decided to leave it, so that passers by could point and laugh.

Because I am a Quixotic masochist who really doesn't know when to take a break, I'm trying to work up a response to the [community profile] omniocular Post-War Challenge. It's going to have to be quick and dirty because I'm very busy, but what the hell...

For this story I need two things.

First, whereabouts in the US is a good place to situate the ranch of a wealthy Wizarding landowner? It needs to be somewhere with a lot of space - somewhere with bison for preference, though these are optional.

Second, I need some walk-on characters to snub Blaise Zabini in a pub. I already have Hagrid, Crabbe and his wife, Eloise Midgeon and possibly Colin Dennis Creevey (changed at the request of [profile] synaesthete7) lined up for this - but the tables are large in the Leaky Cauldron, and I think it'll take quite a lot of quiet disapproval for Blaise to cotton on...

Just leave a message saying which canon character (preferably one who might plausibly be still alive post-war) you'd like to do the snubbing, and I'll do my best to accomodate. Thanks!

Checked my journal this morning, and it's gone from tasetful white with grey trimmings to horrid grey boxes.

I've not been near the page where you modify this thing - I'm not even sure which page it is or how it's done. I certainly wouldn't have done it on purpose. It's drab and ugly this way, and I don't like it. I feel like Trinny and Susannah have snuck into my flat without my leave and thrown out all my favourite clothes.

Has this happened to anyone else? More importantly, can anyone tell me how to fix it?
___________

ETA: With help from [personal profile] krislaughs and [profile] swythyv, I have found the settings and sent the vile grey boxes packing. I don't much care for this sappy mauve colour - but it'll do till I can find something that's a bit more me. It's not a personal statement, OK?
___________

ETA2: Found a layout that won't give people migraines and doesn't involve blue or mauve! (I have nothing against those colours, but this just isn't a mauve sort of journal). A little pretentious, perhaps, but far more my cup of tea.

I'm not a hopeless cook, but I'm a joyless one. I dislike doing more than the bare minimum - and yet at the same time bad food depresses me. Because I lived in China for years (where Western ingredients were impossible to find and food cooked by others was as cheap as it was delicious), my Western repertoire is very limited. I can make a passable south-western Chinese spread, but it takes forever - once term starts there's no way I'll have the time to do that every day. The other alternative is bought food, which is expensive and often not really good for you.

After Christmas at my parents', and lots of my mum's good cooking, I've realised I need to smarten up my act a bit. I have a small repertoire of boring dishes I cook - and I'm sick of them.

For this reason, I'm really hoping that some of my nice, knowledgable F-list can supply me with recipes, short cuts, book recs or any other recommendations that will help me prepare food that won't take all evening and is relatively easy to prepare.

All help greatly appreciated!

On the presents I got this year - in particular, a small metal bat. )

Did any of you get anything that just hit the spot like that - a present that was just the right thing in the right place? Tell me, if so - I'm in a mood to collect cheerful experiences.

But actually it's another nice present that I need to ask about. I've been given some money earmarked for a decent stereo system (my current one still works, but it's a bit delapidated even by my standards), and have realised I've no idea how to go about buying such a thing.

Have any of you had any experience of buying such stereos recently? Do you have any advice - things to avoid, brands that are good etc? I don't have a huge budget, but is it worthwhile paying a bit extra to get DAB?

... a way to stop buying books?

Books have long since overflowed out of my bookshelves and established colonies on the floor of my flat. While all the piles of books are neat and not particularly unsightly, I have done a quick count, and I currently have 7 piles, all well over a foot in height.

And yet this afternoon, while searching for a birthday present for a friend, I treated myself to two more new books. Despite the fact that I have several very nice books waiting to be read at home, plenty of other books that are well worth a read and two busy weeks of teaching before the end of term...

I can't carry on like this. It's not fair on me, it's not fair on my bank balance and it's not fair on the books - they deserve to be read and cherished, not stored in piles. But how can I stop? New books are nice, and temptation is everywhere. There are at least three second-hand bookshops withing five minutes' walk of my flat.

My F-list seem fantastic at helping answer questions, no matter how abstruse (see last entry). So I thought I'd try my luck again. It's getting crazy in here.

Any advice, up to and including the use of electrodes, gratefully received.

It's such a long time now since I posted the first half of the words-and-chickens story I'm writing for the [livejournal.com profile] perposterice challenge that it's in danger of sinking without trace. But I'm determined to try and finish it before the New Big Project begins, in spite of all the work and whatnot I've had to do - and despite the fact that the deadline for said challenge fic is long gone. If you're interested, the first half can be found here.

It's taken me a long time to work out what's holding me back, but I've just realised what the problem is - one subplot is a bunch of chickens seized by collective religious mania, and I've really no idea how the chickens would react. That's understandable, of course - still, I reckon I could wing it (if you'll forgive the expression) if I just knew a bit more about chickens. So I would love to know the answers to the following questions:

  1. How do roosters fight?
  2. Do hens fight too? Under what circumstances? What do they do?
  3. How do chickens behave under stress?

If there's anyone who feels able to act as a chickpicker for me, I'd be most grateful.

Other news: I've been to see a film called Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Have any of you heard of it? It really was quite good. I'm not going to comment on it though - I was very tired after an insanely busy week at work, and I bought a large bag of popcorn, sat back and let it all just wash over me. As a watching strategy it has much to recommend it and I had a lovely time (apart from the sad bits), but it doesn't make for great reviews. If you are fond of such, go to my friends page, where many clever things are being said on the subject.

My next door neighbour is a mind reader. She only throws noisy parties when I am ready to weep with exhaustion and desperate for sleep. But it would be immoral to kill her nonetheless, because Killing is Wrong. Right?

You know the kind of thing I mean - the sort that has a tiny integral screen on which you can view the disk without a telly. Preferably the really cheap kind.

I don't own a TV, but a couple of Dr Who DVDs have come into my possession, and it's killing me that I can't watch them. And I'm starting to realise I miss the odd moving picture - I'm sure I'd use it to watch other things.

So, high-tech persons out there, would you say it's worth getting hold of such a thing? Or are they tinny and horrible and a waste of money?
