dolorous_ett: (Complete works)

It's been ages since I've read any Harry Potter fanfiction. Which is really quite strange, considering that the whole purpose of this journal was to read and write the stuff.

This is no reflection on this journal, or its friends - I'm getting a lot of fun out of it just the way it is. But then, just occasionally, I get to thinking "Where's all the fanfic? I want to read a story!"

I'm up to my eyes in work, so this may seem a bit of a daft time to ask, but this is definitely one of my I-want-a-story days.

So who do you know that's writing good stuff now? Have you written something yourself, which I have shamefully overlooked? Do you know of older fanfics you think I'd like? I'd love to hear about it.

I'd also like very much to hear about non-HP fics that are in other fandoms that you think I might know.

Hmmmm. It's been some time for me as well. I can recommend to you, though, an older story written prior to HBP. I'm very fond of it. Take Up Serpents, a tale of Tom Riddle's early years, in which he goes to the Appalachian Mountains in America to seek out a famous Parselmouth and Dark Wizard. It's gen through and through, and very atmospheric.

I don't know who you ship in Harry Potter, or if you ship much at all really, so I can't help you there - but for more gen you should try [livejournal.com profile] omniocular. YAY FOR GEN.

Also: Warp 5 Complex, the Star Trek: Enterprise fanfic archive.

OMG ENTERPRISE FANFIC ARCHIVE!!!!!11111!!!

That is a fabulous thing to know about - many thanks! *kisses your post*

I like the sound of Take Up Serpents too - and you're quite right, [livejournal.com profile] omniocular is a good source of genfic (I don't ship, though I don't have any real objections to well-done shippy fic).

I haven't read any Potterfic for ages and would like to. I shall watch this space!

Hmm. Maybe I shall manage to write my Arthur raids Malfoy Manor fic before Christmas (speaking of which, may we hoep for another Christmas letter?)

I would love to read about Arthur raiding Malfoy Manor!

(I'm not sure whether Narcissa's delusions and threadbare excuses will have survived another year, but I promise I'll get thinking about it!)

As to the Potterfic, the really interesting thing about this post is how many people seem to be in our position! It's definitely a good time to start writing again.

I've been crazy busy with work and RL, too and haven't read much fic at all since the HD World Cup -- which was also the last time I wrote anything. But I may actually find some time to write this weekend. Yay!

With the holidays approaching, I find I'm starting to crave fic, and I'm getting excited about the holiday exchanges.

So, um, sorry I'm not much help with the recs. Guess I just felt like letting you know that you're not alone!

I completely sympathise, having been in a rather similar position myself with regard to work. And it's pretty clear from the comments that a lot of people have been in a similar position - we're not alone.

I'm almost totally out of HP fandom now, and in the TMNT fandom. And I'm having a blast there but I doubt you're into it. Anyway, I'm going to revisit this post and mooch off of the recs that other people give you. ;)

*is ignorant* What's the TMT fandom?

There are starting to be a few coming in... but the really remarkable thing about this post is all the comments from people who aren't really writing in HP fandom but would like to read it!

I've written recently, but no genfic, I'm afraid. I hardly read fanfic any more and I can't remember the last genfic I read. :P

Did you post, as well as writing? I'm ashamed to say I have no memory of it at all! (LJ use has been rather sporadic of late)

(doesn't matter if it's not gen - I don't mind ships if they're well written)

I wrote a pretty horrible little thing for a Snupin exchange in August that I think is probably the worst thing I've posted in four years, and I have a story in the HP Darkfest that's posting (anon) right now. Though I do think the latter isn't going to be your cup of tea *g*.

You're right - I do tend to shy away from darkfic - not because I think people shouldn't be allowed to write it, or because all of it is more than I can bear, but because I've occasionally run into things there that I find pretty upsetting, and have no wish to repeat the experience.

Still, I'll keep an eye out - perhaps you could point us in that direction when anonymity is lifted...

I'll link to the post, but I'm going to be very noisy about the warnings. I can think of only three people on my flist who'll probably be willing to read it. Even by darkfic standards, it's pretty much on the far boundary of perverted creepiness. According to my beta: 1600 words of pure evil! *cackles madly*

From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
In that case, I make no promises - I may approach, with suitable caution, if I'm feeling robust when you link. I know enough about fandom to know that warnings are there for a reason.

Hope the writing goes well, though, even though the story is Terrifying and Wrong.

Allow me *modest cough* to recommend this; it's shaping up to be my (not at all Deathly Hallows- compliant) version of Book 7.

If you're interested at all in Holmesfic, I would recommend The Adventure of the Fortune-teller's Vase by Teriyakikat, The Case of the Too Obvious Clues and A Case of Reflection by Ronald Carpenter, anything at all by Westron Wynde, and, if you haven't already seen it, [personal profile] prof_pangaea's amazing telegram-fic Sub Rosa.

I don't know if I know enough about Who canon to be able to appreciate all the details... but if the story's strong enough that definitely sounds worth a visit! Thanks!

Hi!
Well, my top two favourite writers right now are (lj) ferwithy and (FA) Inverarity. Here's a post where I explain a little bit about their works and why I like them so much. (My username is Bjarka99, I believe you'll have to scroll down a bit) http://forums.fictionalley.org/park/showthread.php?s=&postid=1850407#post1850407

I hope it'll work. They are both great writing, and very dedicated, especially Fern. She wrote Order POV for Order and Half-Blood Prince, and after Deathly Hallows has written Teddy Lupin at Hogwarts, years 1, 3 and 5 (completed a few days ago!), along with loads of short stories which fit in her universe.
Inverarity's story is about eleven year old Alexandra, an American muggleborn girl who is invited to attend Charmbridge Academy, one of the most prestigious american schools of magic. This is one of the few magical-world-outside-of-Britain that I've found believable and coherent with canon.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Those look interesting - thank you so much!

I've read some of Fernwithy's earlier stuff - notably the part where Remus works at Dudley's school - but have never worked up any enthusiasm for Teddy Lupin. Perhaps I need to challenge that assumption!

I very much enjoyed the first few chapters of Ferns first Teddy Lupin novel when I read them a few months ago, FWIW. Sadly I lost momentum, and haven't gone back to it, but it's well up to her usual standard.

I seem to have lost the ability to concentrate on reading stuff on-screen. :(

[livejournal.com profile] gilpin25 has been writing some brilliant stuff lately. I am slightly biased because she's one of my favourite f-listers, but her work really is good. She writes mostly R/T and Marauder-era gen.

Edited to add: I'd also recommend a browse around www.coffee-and-chocolate.com. It has recs for some amazing fic, a lot of it Gen - I've discovered some real gems on there.

A big thank you for both recs! I especially like the idea of Maurauders-era gen - there isn't nearly enough of that around.

Oh, goodness. The last HP fic I wrote was for last year's [livejournal.com profile] hp_holidaygen, and I remember you writing a very nice review for it. :) I've actually not been reading too much HP fic recently either, although with the exchange season coming up, I probably will wander back. Do check out the [livejournal.com profile] femgenficathon offerings this year, though -- there are a lot of gems in there!

And if you've got any interest whatsoever in Shakespeare's history plays, [livejournal.com profile] angevin2 ran a Histories Ficathon over the summer and all the stories are posted in [livejournal.com profile] thisengland.

Oh, thank you! I'm still trying to decide whether or not I'm doing Holidaygen this year -- I do want to, but I'm already signed up for [livejournal.com profile] yuletide, and it might be too much for mid-December...

You'll probably catch me panicking about it first! :) But to be honest, the more I think about it, the more I sort of want to do Holidaygen too. I just have a fic-related death wish, apparently!

Sorry to butt in, but do you know if [livejournal.com profile] hp_holidaygen is happening this year? There's not a sniff of activity at the comm yet.

I don't actually know -- if I'm remembering properly, sign-ups had already started by this time last year, but the moderator, [livejournal.com profile] virginia_bell, is incredibly overworked this term, so I don't know if she'll have the time.

OK, that's a shame, although perfectly understandable. Sad that none of the gen exchanges seem to have happened this year!

Wow... I'm honoured!

Thank you very much! There are some other great stories to look at on that list too.

(by the way, I've friended you back - I hope you don't mind the delay, but I don't generally friend empty or apparently abandoned journals for fear of sockpuppets - and also my Spanish is really, really terrible!)

Self-plug if you feel like a bit of HP courtroom drama and post-war realignments: A Law of the Medes and Persians. Does contain some H/G and R/Hr too, but hopefully as a natural consequence of the setting rather than being the entire point of the story! :)

Summary: Harry would have liked a little peace and quiet after the Battle of Hogwarts to decide what he wanted to do next (although rebuilding his relationship with Ginny was definitely high on the list). But any such hopes were dashed by unexpected threats to his godson and to Kingsley's position as Minister, and once again, he and his friends found themselves in a courtroom taking on an old enemy ...
