In a rather hopeless effort to prove that I am not always a terminally grumpy old sourpuss who angsts about everything, I've stolen the Character Love Meme from [personal profile] lyras.

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I will write no more than 100 words on why I love them.

So - name your characters! Fandoms: Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire, Star Trek: Next Generation, Star Trek: Enterprise, Robin Hobb's Farseer and Golden Fool series, Alastair Reynolds's Revelation Space quartet, (a lot of, but not all) Terry Pratchett, Lord of the Rings, Mina de Malfois.

No reasonable (or unreasonable) offer refused...

Oh! I forgot to tell you that I read the whole Revelation Space quartet on various planes and trains while traveling through the UK. Loved them so much.

And on that note: tell me why you love Captain John Brannigan, before or after (or both) he becomes one with Nostalgia For Infinity. ;)

Captain John Brannigan

Yay! I'm so glad you liked the Revelation Space series - I really do think he's one of the most exciting hard SF writers going at the minute.

I've just finished reading Pushing Ice, which is also brilliant.

Brannigan...

Big space rockets are automatically cool. Going through interstellar space is way cool. And actually becoming a big space rocket (and the Nostalgia for Infinity is very big...) - cooler than that, you just don't get.

As a person - well, the man has done some awful things in the past. But he certainly makes up for it in the books - always there when needed - in the end.

And I also think the idea of cyborging yourself to be able to live in hard vacuum, even if it means doing weird things to your eyes and nose, is also pretty cool.

Tell me why you love Archer from Enterprise... no, I'm kidding! Let's say T'Pol, instead.

Ask, and you shall receive...

Archer?

Very simply, I love Archer because you can always rely on him to make the stupid and Quixotic decision over the sensible one - leading to many exciting adventures. I also love his collection of porn, so carefully housed in old-book covers... the entire crew knows, but he still thinks it's a secret!

I love T'pol because she puts up with so much without a murmer. Because she is the voice of reason on Enterprise. Because I just love the way she says "This is a foolish mission". I also love the way she expresses rolling her eyes through every action without actually rolling them. She has gone out on a big limb to follow Enterprise - it's admirable. And I enjoy her occasional flashes of extremely dry humour.

Well, it's never explicitly stated, but what other interpretation can there be? Do you seriously think Archer can be a committed collector of old books? Or that if he was, he would be able to have kept them for so long without setting fire to them or something?

I confess that my knowledge of Archer is pretty much limited to that revealed via your LJ, but considering Star Trek, it seemed both a little too much to hope, yet always possible!

Tell me about Elrond.

Date: 2006-09-24 02:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
Elrond is one of the most important people in Lord of the Rings. He is a vital store of knowledge and information - and protection. If he hadn't kept Rivendell safe the Hobbits would have got caught by the Black Riders and Sauron would have the Ring. He is a source of a lot of the really vital information (Paths of the Dead, the rune-letters on Thorin's map - to name but two) that allows our heroes to succeed against huge odds.

He may not get a lot of air-time or chances for self-expression, but does that matter so much?

It's gotta be Stan the Man from HP. G'on. Give him some lovin'. :D

Date: 2006-09-24 02:35 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
Stan is the Man. Without a doubt.

He has a strangely enjoyable accent and a cool job - he probably gets to see more of the country than anyone else in the Wizarding world except Ernie. And he's never afraid to ask the really obvious questions - consider how much more pleasant Harry's life would be now if he'd just gone ahead and asked things instead of sulking!

And now he is a Political Prisoner. When the pendulum swings the other way he'll be in a very strong position - who knows, he might become someone very big indeed in the Ministry...

This is just canon!Stan of course. My fanon!Stan will appear in my Blaise Zabini fic (which I do mean to finish one of these days - really!) - and when Blaise comes back from America having completely avoid the war, all the beautiful girls in the Leaky Cauldron ignore him completely for Dashing War Hero!Stan who saved thousands through acts of courage on the Knight Bus...

Tell me about Tyrion Lannister ...

Date: 2006-09-24 03:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
I'm rereading ASOIAF at the minute, and Tyrion's parts I can always read over and over again.

He's one of the few people in the book who isn't blinded by his own interests, and one of the few who can look an unpleasant truth in the face. Not to mention one of the few who can really laugh - a lot of his peers are often funny, but it's rarely on purpose!

I enjoy (and suspect he does too) the irony of his situation - he's one of the few trying to help King's Landing, and yet he's blamed for everything because he looks funny.

I also like the way he's rude to his relations.

Yes! I think he's the only major character in the entire series with a sense of humour. And I love how he knocks off his dad. One of the true gorgeous moments in the series.

Havelock Vetinari ?

Date: 2006-09-24 03:56 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
I want to be Vetinari when I grow up. I want people to quail when I say "enter" in that particularly neutral way.

And I loved the way he set the rats, scorpions and snakes in the dungeon against each other, made the rats his minions and then made sure no-one else could get in.

Basically, anyone who can keep a city like Ankh-Morpork on the go would get my vote under any circs, however unorthodox his methods.

I also enjoyed his junior incarnation in "Night's Watch" very much.

Tell me how much you love BalletChic.

Love Enduring...

It's at moments like this that I wish I had a paid account, so I could put up one of those lovely pink "I didn't know her but I can't stop crying" icons.

BalletChic is a tragic lost soul, drifting through the internet, the ghost of a love so cruelly scorned...

Actually, I love BalletChic because she seems to bring out Mina's common sense and talent for caustic remarks like nothing else. And because she is responsible for the addition of the word "pseucide" into my vocabulary.

I'd like to hear about Xenalvr.

Your last sentence is a Tommy and Tuppence reference, isn't it? :)

Xenalvr is someone I could have a massive crush on, if I were the type to get literary crushes. I mean, she's Captain Jack Sparrow, BUT COMPETENT! And female! And tough! And she takes on the ridiculous Cultists and converts her to her way of thinking *swoons* - good heavens, what's not to like?

Granny Weatherwax is a marvel. I adore her cynicism and put-downs. I also like the way Pratchett makes it very clear that just because she knows exactly where the bodies are buried doesn't mean she's permanently happy - rather the reverse.

All the same, I'd rather be wise like her than brainlessly happy.

Lady Margaery Tyrell?

Date: 2006-09-25 02:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
I'm rereading the books at the moment - and so far I'm halfway through book 2, and M so far hasn't put in an appearance at all. I've only read A Feast for Crows once, which is where the main Margaery action comes in. So bear with me!

Poor Margaery - her life seems to be one long series of weddings, funerals, more weddings...

I can't quite make out why I love her. Either I love her because she's one of the few people who's nice and is making it work for her (see the way she wins over Sansa!), or else I love her because she is a very good actress indeed, and a mistress of cunning - makes Cersei seem like HOdor. But obviously it can't be both...

And I love her because she has light brown hair and is very beautiful. Most fanasty heroines are either blonde or raven-black.

Okay... So, why do you love Ginny Weasley?

Date: 2006-09-25 02:43 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
I love Ginny because she shows us that just because you start out your appearance at school with the worst kind of public humiliation (nearly terminal in Ginny's case) it doesn't have to stay that way!

And because she sticks up for Luna and Neville - and if that isn't the sign of a loveable personality I would like to know what is!

Alright, tell me why you love Jon Snow. ;)

Date: 2006-09-25 04:12 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
I love Jon Snow because he knows how to choose his friends - not that common a quality in Westeros! And he listens to them, too. And looks after the weak.

I love him because of all the places the reader sees through his eyes.

And I love the way he is so constantly wrongfooted by Ygritte!

Ooh, so many good fandoms! Because I'm a sap, I shall go for the obvious Pratchett one. Tell me why you love Sam Vimes, please!

Date: 2006-09-25 04:20 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
I love Sam Vimes because he's designed to be loved. It's hard to be more specific - he's just the one we're meant to identify with - of course we like him because he's horribly flawed - just like us.

I love his cynicism, the mad plans he makes and the way he interacts with his colleagues.

And I love his family!

Sansa Stark

Date: 2006-09-25 04:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com
There's not a lot of Sansa love among the fans - unfairly, I think - she was bred to be a sweet little thing who would be shielded from everything nasty. It's hardly her fault things didn't turn out that way!

I love Sansa because she always tries to be a good girl - as I was when small. I love her interactions with the Hound, and the way she's nice to Tommen.

And I also very much love the way she seems finally to be wising up...
