Meme: In Which Love Conquers All
Aug. 10th, 2007 12:01 pmSometimes when you're in a vile mood and fed up with everything, attempting to fill the world with love (gritting your teeth all the while) is strangely therapeutic. Here's hoping, anway.

Give me the names of two characters and I will tell you why character A loves character B. I might answer with a drabble, a quick bit of meta, or a list, just to make things that tiny bit more OMGSOEXCITING!
Pick anyone from Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: The Next Generation or any other book you think I might have read.
Bring it on...

Date: 2007-08-10 12:58 pm (UTC)The short version: Luna loves Colin because he believed her when she said there was a giant in the Forbidden Forest, because together they learned the truth about Grawp, and because of the friendship that began when Grawp was their secret, back in the days when everyone picked on both of them for being weird. She also finds his Muggle good sense a refreshing change, even when he talks about things - such as the Hubble Space Telescope and blood groups - that are plainly nonsensical.
The long version: The Story What I Wrote - Furious Wielder of Storms, featuring Colin, Luna and Grawp http://www.fictionalley.org/authors/pavonis/FWOS.html

Date: 2007-08-10 01:05 pm (UTC)Gene loves the way Sam makes him do good things, such as arresting evil gangsters. He also enjoys the way Sam makes no attempt to fanboy him - all that adulation from people like Ray (what's his name again?) was great stuff, but it was all a bit the same.
I think on some level he sees Sam as a reflection of himself. For this reason, he would continue to like Sam if he stopped being the Good One - in fact, this would make Gene happy, as he would see it as a validation of some of his less savoury choices.

Would the other way round be more of a challenge? Ignore me if I'm just being greedy!
I got asked to compile a list of reading suggestions for a big group holiday I'm going on in a couple of weeks. I chose APoGS, and am now desperately hoping that people love it; as I think I said to

Date: 2007-08-10 04:18 pm (UTC)Umbridge proved intractable to all Azkaban could do to rehabilitate her and make her into a decent person - so as a last resort, they called in Q.
Q felt ready for another bout of Picard-torturing, so he altered the fabric of reality so that Umbridge was made Starfleet ensign (despite failing to meet both the height and age qualification) and placed on the enterprise as her last resort before being expelled from Starfleet as a troublemaker.
Picard, ever professional, manfully struggled against his distate for her political manoeverings and toxic personality, and, very slowly, with a combination of dangerous toil, positions of real trust and sessions with Counsellor Troi as a last resort, gradually overcame all her old habits and made her a useful member of the crew. She now oversees the entire janitorial and cleaning staff of E and F deck (her team came top in the last surprise Admiral's inspection), and is very happy. She will never forget Picard for showing her the joys of the community when you are working with people instead of harrying and bullying them. She is still far from popular, but she is getting there. Data is giving her lessons in humanity, and she is starting to realise that she has a lot to learn.
Picard has a soft spot for Umbridge as well - he finds her prickly, but every time he looks at her he gets a warm glow - he reformed the ensign that even Q had given up on as a bad job!

Date: 2007-08-11 04:09 pm (UTC)Is this useful?
Date: 2007-08-11 04:33 pm (UTC)I started out with a ship-generator on Fiction Alley, which just gave you two characters and a connecting sentence. I got "The Golden Snitch has a massive crush on Bartemius Crouch Senior"! The story was actually quite fun to write, and after that I had a bit more confidence to write my own story ideas. The ideas also seemed to come a lot more easily after I'd started writing.
Hope some of this helps, anyway...

Date: 2007-08-10 11:15 pm (UTC)Brienne loves the Blackfish because he is a great warrior and a decent human being. He also appears to be completely indifferent as to whether she is beautiful or not - he only judges her on her fighting skills, which is the one thing she's craved all her adult life, and the one thing no-one will do for her.
no subject
Date: 2007-08-10 11:32 pm (UTC)And that's actually quite convincing -- even if the Blackfish is gay, as some people speculate!
no subject
Date: 2007-08-11 08:21 am (UTC)Well, considering that her first crush was Renly, I don't think it would matter much even if he was.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Blackfish were gay - though I think that GRRM may well stop short of being particularly explicit on this one, given that the cultural mores of the place the Blackfish is in don't allow it.
Still, does it matter if the result is that he treats Brienne like a warrior instead of an ugly girl in armour?

Date: 2007-08-11 09:10 am (UTC)I'm not sure homosexuality -- or at any rate homosexual acts -- is/are that much against the mores of Westeros actually? It's a world which basically takes medieval Europe, shifts bits around, and adds some magic; as I read it, the attitude would be that as long as you marry and produce an heir and a spare, any other indulgences are your own business. The attitude towards Renly and Loras seems to be sneers rather than the outright condemnation for incest or kinslaying.
no subject
Date: 2007-08-11 11:51 am (UTC)That's as good a summary as I can think of. After all, it was refusal to marry that got the Blackfish kicked out, wasn't it, not homosexuality (or whispers of it?)
And good point about Loras and Renly - the general idea seems to be that it's just a rather mockable habit provided you've done your duty and got married as well.

Date: 2007-08-11 08:13 am (UTC)T'pol, on the other hand, loves Archer because he bothers her superiors so much (remember - he is in the Guinness Book of Records as the only human to have made a Vulcan facepalm in public). She has made much use of the confusion and panic he engenders among most Vulcans to cut various advantageous business and career deals.
