I only know of Vanuatu as a place where there are lots of volcano-related earthquakes. But now I know of it as something else, too! Wow, you learn something new every day.
I didn't know anything about Vanuatu at all until today - now I know two things - both of which make me suspect that it might not be my kind of place...
I rmember reading an article about this a long time ago. I didn't realise the Prince Phillip worship had managed to survive the advent of the global village. It's amazing.
Now if T. Pratchett's theory of Godhood is actually correct then Phillip really is a God 'cos people believe in him. I find that somewhat scary.
Given that David Attenborough used to have a tendency to be mistaken for Prince Phillip when wandering around the south seas, does this mean that he is also a god?
but we never see him. i mean idont' thnk he's very active inthe media and so forth. d yo uguys get even aglimpe of him? i have to say soem of the changign of the guards and other traditional ceremonies they show tourist do feel abit like oldrituals...
I've never knowingly seen a member of the Royal Family in the flesh, but Prince Philip is the Chancellor of several universities, including the one I work in. Apparently he's prone to random and troubling decisions that the sensible people who actually, you know, work there have to work hard to undo! (this last part may be slander - I don't know).
I personally don't care two hoots for the pack of them - but a lot of people here still do. It's strange.
well heh..i jsut care for history mostly. these days it'sj sut all too symbolic to me. i ahd the same werid feelign when they decided notto send harry to iraq (butthat's odl news now too) i stil lremember we sort of half-watched the funeral of diana and my dad decded to take that particualr momentto completely knock down her character right in front of me. i'd read some snippets of obituary, just pretty postive stuff adn hwoeveyr onloved her. id' herad her voice afew times (and you'll know by now i'l ljsut have to go with if someoen soudns sympathetic or nice to me adn so forth)adn then he digs up al lthe darker stories and i'm like 'please, not now." heh...i'll be likel yto read some wild stuff when i'm ofto read history. it's the same with our dutch royal family. i wsa most itnerested when someoen ent completley out of line in afunny way and had me laugh till i cried.
Well, it's nice to see that Phil has some co-believers. Because I've always suspected he thought of himself as a god.
I think Phil loves the idea. In his mind it's the "normal" relational model of the white european with non-white non-european people: I am your god, and I will deign to allow you to worship me.
Yes, I'm afraid it is for real. Or rather, the BBC is generally one of the UK's more reliable sources, so I think we can assume it's for real as April Fool's Day is long gone!
Unless the inhabitants of that island were actually duping the poor, credulous reporter...

Date: 2007-06-11 09:21 am (UTC)It suggests a pretty bleak view of the world, though, if their idea of godhead is Prince Philip. Not a life I'd like to lead.

I find that absolutely terrifying!
