Iconses!

It's the Icons Meme - [personal profile] bookwormsarahpicked out five of my icons and asked me to talk about them:

This lovely thing is my default icon. It was the first icon I picked when I got a paid account and could afford more. I like it because it has trees and birds and is more than a little trippy and implausible looking, with lovely, warm, comforting colours. I use it for pleasant things in general, and for when I can't think of anything more appropriate.

I use this one for memes, or when people are behaving in a particularly sheep-like manner. It is taken, of course, from the Borg in Star Trek.

Like a lot of people who spend time online, I found myself in need of a zombie icon. Unfortunately, I don't find traditional zombies particularly pleasing visually, so I was very happy when  [profile] fungus_filescreated a series of zombie marsupial icons from old pictures, of which the zombie-roo is one. This is the icon I use when I'm feeling particularly zombie-like, or when reporting exceptionally brainless behaviour.

This is from the Korean Carrot Song. I don't speak a word of Korean, but I became fascinated by this strange song and its animation last year, and had quite a lot of fun speculating what it might actually be about. The kindly  [personal profile] aeramamade me several icons from it, including this amimated one, which I use for posts of unusal festivity. My Very, Very Good News icon.

This one's from the wonderful  [personal profile] mina_de_malfois series - a story of a rather flawed BNF in an imaginary fandom slowly stumbling towards something approaching common sense. If for any reason you haven't read [personal profile] mina_de_malfois yet, you really should - it's brilliantly funny, especially the first season, and is full of wonderful little quotes like this. When I use it, it's usually the icon equivalent of a facepalm.

If you want me to do this for your icons, leave me a comment!

I love your icons - you seem to have so many for appropriate moments.

(Prob. not worth doing this one on me, since I've just got a basic account. Although, hmm, I don't think I've ever actually recced the story that my default icon comes from.)

I've seen that story - and it's fabulous. In fact, I think I found the story because I saw your icon, it's that good...

Oh, why not.

So many! I had a lot of questions, but I'll settle for:

muppetfoy, cold kitchen hill, cuppa, fotherington-tomas (just because I like it!), hot all-gelert wand action.

Do you happen to know where the art in your default icon is from? It looks like something that'd be on a Threadless T-shirt. :)

Offhand I don't know... but I can trace the links back and show you where I got it from, at least. I'm sure it's still there.

Userpics: bad touch, Pedja with cigarette, elated overjoyed squee, sweet zombie jesus, cosplay (I hope these are identifiable - you have very long names for your userpics! And so many...)

All right, let's see here:

Made this because it amused me far more than it should have. I guess the shot was only supposed to look creepy, but instead it looks creepy and sexually inappropriate (*grope!*), which makes it prime fodder for putting on LiveJournal.

My response to the fact that everyone seems to have at least one icon of their favorite actor or actress. As I don't know much about movie stars myself I thought I'd just use one of Pedja Bjelac. I think this is from one of his Serbian films, but I can't remember which one.

My all-purpose "yay awesome!" icon. The character is Kaorin (a generic Japanese schoolgirl) from the slice-of-life comedy Azumanga Daioh.

I think the actual phrase "Sweet Zombie Jesus!" is from The Simpsons, which I don't watch, but the rest of the icon is self-explanatory. (Well, self-explanatory if you're among the Disney generation. :P) Icon used for those rare but potent "OH GOD, I CAN'T UNSEE IT" moments.

From the defunct Potter webcomic [livejournal.com profile] pottercon. It's supposed to be Viktor Krum...dressed as a narwhal...for Christmas. I don't get it either, but it was funny.

Thank you - most enlightening!

I had this idea that your Cigarette Smoking man might have something to do with late period Sirius Black in his Gimmauld Place days - but there, just shows how wrong I can be!

I still don't get the Krum joke - but it is cute...

Icon love! <3 I just bought the big huge ol' collector's DVD boxset of the whole Granada series (used, of course). Well worth the money, though!

Edit: Also, the artist who drew what's in your default icon is apparently Natasha Wescoat.

Wescoat without the T? No wonder I've never been able to find them by googling!

Thank you!

*must comment about Holmes*
We have the Granada series as well and have been going through story after story for a little while now. I'm hooked all over again...and oh! When Jeremy Brett's hair is all rumpled instead of slicked back, I must say he's a FINE looking man.
Of course he is generally anyway...

I love your default icon, it's so pretty.

I'll play, nothing like a bit of procrasination in meme form. :)

I love that carrot icon! When I see it, I know something really awesome has happened in your life.

And, well, I fear AND love the zombie kangaroo, because there's kangaroos around here, and I don't like to think of what would happen if they turned bad.

Barging in here to ask: Have you seen Black Sheep? It's about zombie sheep, and set in the Kingdom of Sheep, New Zealand. :D

We loved it, but we would, given the obsession with monster movies and horror in general.

I haven't seen it - my girlfriend has a big time zombie squick, - I had to drag her insensate from the cinema after 28 Days Later. The Kiwis have a good tradition of schlock-horror, though.

I haven't read any zombie sheep films, but in Charles Stross's "Jennifer Morgue", the deranged millionaire villain uses zombie seagulls as snooping devices.

You read the Language of Icons! Brilliant!

It's hard to imagine a land where kangaroos just hop about wild - must be quite a place! About the most exciting things we get round here are squirrels, and the occasional magpie.

Please tell me about:

Snape likes to watch,
Drugs, pharmacy, work

It makes me squeefully happy to see the zombie-roo find such a fond and witty home. :D

Prolly won't play this time around as am meant to be incredibly heads-down busy...

The zombie-roo is much loved, and much admired by passers by.

Will respect your wish not to play, but do let me know if you change your mind, as you have some gorgeous icons!

Good reading here! I like the word-association with the images...your default icon is still the best.

And I'm glad you still like all the crazy carrots. :)

You don't have to do this for me b/c I'm back to basic also, but if you want to, go right ahead!

I'm also very fond of this one...

If you do want to play, how about

Gator Cafe
Miskatonic Mouse Club
So Fabulous

House (moth and flame)

Aw!

Okay, time for long-windedness here on your journal.

Gator Cafe came from letterhead my dad had. I don't know where he got it from, but I always liked it, and to me it seemed that this 'gator was either at a table outside a restaurant or inside a smoky cafe/nightclub, and either way, he was listening to some good tunes!

Miskatonic Mouse Club is more hilarity-forming for Mr. Aerama than for me, but it all has to do with H.P. Lovecraft, and to me Lovecraft = Cthulhu because he's cute. And it's a fabulous pun. (I don't know how prevalent the Mickey Mouse Club is over there, but I grew up watching it on TV and being a "member" and all that. And of course now it seems to be mentioned with Britney Spears in every other sentence...)

So Fabulous is a modification on a tadpole - for that is supposed to be a tadpole - from the Pearls Before Swine comic, which has Pig and Goat and Rat and Zebra and idiot Crocodiles. To me the smile on this little guy equated fabulousness, and I tend to use it when people should have congratulations!

Mouse - our sole remaining cat, here snapped after being bombed out on catnip. She actually didn't mind the camera and seems to be posing. The vet worked out that she's 78 years old and in great shape...here's to more years with her!

House (Moth & Flame): In this particular scene, the girl also known as Cutthroat B*tch had just revealed she wasn't wearing any underwear. It had to do with a manipulative game they were playing to win a spot on House's team. So as House walks out, he looks her up and down, but it's when he's in the "up" position that his eyes burn the most with speculation, and I love that. She looks a little unsettled - yet who's the moth and who's the flame?

Thank you - that clears things up a lot!

My personal favourite is still the Gator Club one... but only just!
