Remind me never again to read "Have Your Say" on the BBC website

I really should have know better, but I have just read four pages of readers' comments on a thread about mothers and immigration. Never have I seen such a bunch of heartless, petty, small-minded, fatuous, illogical and illiterate posts. 

I'm not going to dignify that thread with a link, but it makes me ashamed to be British

It's disgusting - people (some people) can't tell the difference between a legal and illegal immigrant; the comments border on Nazism.

I've remarked on it in my own LJ today, and also sent a comment to HYS, but I doubt it'll be published. The BBC are selective (at best) and trolls (at worst) in the comments they allow or reject. They thrive on controversy!

I sympathize, but also challenge you to find a country on Earth in which no one holds heartless/petty/small-minded/etc. opinions. (What I mean is, don't be ashamed to be British because of some stupid comments on the BBC site - ignorance and pigheadedness are universal, unfortunately.)

I suppose you're right - I should try to take comfort from the fact that at least I'm not attempting to blame this plague of stupid and nasty on immigrants!

An emphatic YES to that - not passive-aggressive and snappy like the Gruaniad, but out-and-out racist and just pig-ignorant. Pretty disgusting, really.
