A meme it was, a meme, a meme!

Because it seems like forever since I've done one of these. Pinched from the lovely [livejournal.com profile] lyras .

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I'll give you either:

(a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon,
(b) a reason he/she sucks,
(c) a reason he/she is awesomecakes,
(d) five things that never happened to that character, or
(e) five people that character never fell in love with and why.

You pick the character. I pick the letter.

My fandoms: Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wheel of Time, Vorkosigan Saga, Dorothy L. Sayers, Mina de Malfois, anything else you think I might know and could be drawn out on.

Cordelia Naismith Vorkosigan (and if the Betans are so bloody advanced and liberal, why do they still have a system in which women take their husband's names?).

[Edd. Yes, I know some women freely choose to do this, and that's fine. But for it to be the default on a planet where licensed physical sex therapist is a highly-respected profession strikes me as a bit odd.]

Eeek! You had to pick up the one character from those books about whom I have almost no opinion, seeing as how she's so Perfect in Every Way. Still, quick thinking has produced a handful of personal fanon facts.

a) Coming from such a dry world, Cordelia is appalled and fascinated by the sea in equal measure.

b) For years she has been considering cutting off her hair, in order to terrify the staid matrons of Barrayar. But she can't bring herself to do it - she has such pretty hair.

c) She would never mention this to a soul, but when things get a bit rocky in the Vorkosigan household, she secretly looks back with a joyful nostalgic yearning at the One who Got Away, a dashing hermaphrodite who probably was just as crazy about her as she was about (personal pronoun), but neither of them ever plucked up the courage to speak. She's never mentioned this to a soul, however - even Ivan would never really understand.

As to the surname thing - well, it's a mystery. Perhaps men take their wives names in a similar way? Or perhaps it's what Bujold would approve of, and therefore just The Right Thing to Do?

The Mary Poppins of Barrayar.

I particularly like (c). I was looking for stuff on the books on the internet the other day, in which LMB said that the logical next development would be the death of Aral Vorkosigan and Cordelia's return to Beta. So maybe there is hope for hidden hermapprodite!passion yet (and can you imagine what Miles' political enemies would make of it!).

Would try to make of it, you mean. Like him or not, the man's completely fireproof.

Helen Wimsey, Duchess of Denver, or Aulus Camillus Aelianus!
Edited 2008-09-22 18:34 (UTC)

[identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
d) Aulus Camillus Aelianus has never

1) seen action in his time in the legions
2) manhandled a woman
3) envied his sister
4) accepted a bribe
or 5) had more fun than his brother.

(sorry, not nearly so much fun as yours, but the best I could come up with)

And Helen Wimsey is perhaps not awesomecakes as such, but definitely at least a little awesomesauce for carrying right on being herself as hard as she can, even though no-one likes her.

Poor Aulus.

I do however, feel that he is the kind of person you can rely on in a crisis, and cannot wait to see him in Alexandria.

[identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, poor old Aulus. While freely admitting that he's a pain in the neck, I think Davis is very cleverly using this to disguise the fact that at bottom he's completely trustworthy. I'm not quite sure if the same can be said of his brother...

I'm glad there's going to be another Falco book, and Alexandria sounds like great fun.

I'm also really glad she isn't doing a book a year any more - I'm convinced that's the reason for a run of rather poor performances before Saturnalia.

[personal profile] aella_irene 2008-09-23 04:44 pm (UTC)(link)
See Saturnalia, and his presence in Britain for Quintus' trustworthiness, I think. (Also, the time he dragged poor Claudia through the desert in search of silphium)

I am, though, waiting for Aulus to turn up married to a plain girl with no money, and shock everyone by considering her on par with Juno, Venus, and Ceres combined.

Alexandria does look good, doesn't it? Especially Pa, who will probably try to flog off various fake manuscripts. Also, considering travel time, how pregnant is Helena likely to be?

[identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com 2008-09-25 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I take your point about Saturnalia - am less convinced about Britain though - wasn't he trying to seduce a barmaid all the time? Which turned out to be in the interests of the case in hand, but only with the benefit of hindsight?

I think you could trust Justinus to the death in a genuine emergency, but I'm not convinced that he would stay trustworthy if left to wander off!

It's my personal opinion that Albus is being set up as a match for Falco's ward Albia. I'm not sure if I think this is a good thing or not...

You mean Pa's coming too in Alexandria? Then it will be fantastic - worth queueing for hours for!

I think that the fact that he went to Britain, and didn't tell his wife suggests a certain untrustworthiness.

I can see that Aulus is being set up, and like you I'm unsure- he seems so desperate to be respectable, and she isn't, and can't be barring a miracle.

Oh yes, "Their involvement in local affairs already seems shady when they are joined by their crony, Falco's father, Geminus, a man well known for disreputable business practices. If the irrepressible Pa has had any hand in what has gone wrong at the Library, Falco knows he stands no chance..."

Ooh - I didn't know there was a new one coming out. It sounds as if it's going to be very entertaining, too!

I'll pick HP and Remus Lupin (suprise, suprise). ;)

[identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
a) Three facts about Remus Lupin

1) He's always been crazy about Tonks, but for a long time lacked the self-confidence to laugh in the faces of the people who he was convinced would invariably call him a cradle snatcher.
2) He wanted to be in Slytherin, feeling it was the coolest house. It took him a long time to realise why it really, really wouldn't have worked.
3) His guilty pleasure is reading the works of Gilderoy Lockhart, which always put a smile on his face. He has the complete set on his bookshelves at home.

How about Eowyn from LotR?

[identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
a1) It took Eowyn almost no time at all to realise that going for Faramir over the impossible Aragorn was the right thing to do. And she almost never regretted it.

2) While she remained dedicated to the Healing arts for her whole life, it was in a very muscular and forceful way, with a lot of emphasis on vigorous massage and hearty exercises.

3) There will always be a part of Eowyn that believes that she could have done a much better job of ruling Rohan than her brother.

Mrs Hudson!

[identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com 2008-09-23 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Mrs Hudson is completely awesomecakes because she manages to run a smooth household under very trying circumstances. I'm sure Watson is considerate enough - but can you imagine trying to keep track of Holmes's daily needs? She has to be a pretty sharp detective herself even to know when to do his laundry, and when to have his meals ready! She doesn't have a lot of air-time, but I would like to think that she's secretly keeping a keen (and perhaps slightly amused?) eye on the proceedings.

Five people Rita Skeeter never fell in love with:

1. Hermione Granger (being shut in a jar can have that effect on one, strange to say)
2. Neville Longbottom (too plain)
3. Remus Lupin (too earnest)
4. Albus Dumbledore (too good at thwarting her plans for completely out-of-line interviews with his underage charges)
5. Bellatrix Lestrange (too scary for the Prophet, and as such no use to her)

Doctor Phlox from Star Trek: Enterprise!

[identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 12:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Three facts about Dr Phlox (and thank you for chosing him - he's one of my favourite Enterprise characters!)

1) The frequent digestive upsets of Porthos the dog are in fact the side-effects of Phlox's nearly-harmless medical experiments to induce super-intelligence in mammals. He blames unusual symptoms on Archer's habit of feeding the creature cheese, secure in the knowledge that Archer is incapable of resisiting Porthos's pleading eyes in the interests of his health. So far Porthos has shown few signs of unusual intelligence, but Phlox is confident that he can explain that away too, if it ever becomes too obvious.

2) While Phlox deeply regrets having fallen out so spectacularly with his son, he regrets far more deeply confiding this fact to anyone on Enterprise, as almost all the crew are congenital blabbermouths, and now everyone knows all about it. He now keeps getting sympathetic looks, which he hates.

3) Phlox is very fond of T'pol, but disapproves deeply of a lot of her philosophy, which seems to him joyless to the point of self-harm.

No Minaverse yet? Okay, PrinceC.

[identity profile] dolorous-ett.livejournal.com 2008-09-27 12:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Prince C? Oooh, a fun one.

Five people Prince C never fell in love with:

1) MrsSev (too old, too taken on the astral plane)
2) Xenalvr (too much like a beloved old aunt. Not that he would ever voice that thought out loud in her presence, of course!)
3) BalletChic (too crazy, too [arguably] deceased)
4) Mina (while this seems to be against canon, what with the BNF kissing auction at the con and all, I'd argue that PrinceC is used to be first in the queue for everything, and didn't like Warr1or trying to barge in front of him. Quite apart from other possible issues with Warr1or... *g*)
5) Josh Amos (too much like himself)
