Another meme!
I've been tagging old entries in this journal, and was dismayed to find that that Meme tag is a lot bigger than any of the others.
"How embarrassing!" I thought. "This is meant to be a thoughtful and sophisticated kind of journal. I must stay away from memes, and concentrate on more interesting content."
So... here's another meme. Nicked from
perosha.
Pick your 6 favourite fandoms and answer the questions (don't look at the questions before):
1. Sherlock Holmes
2. Harry Potter
3. Star Trek: Enterprise
4. The Archers
5. Lord of the Rings
6. 女子特警队 (Women's Armed Police Squad - a Chinese army soap opera which charts the military career of six young girls from Sichuan who join the elite Armed Police Squad and have adventures, while at the same time learning to be a better person, a responsible citizen and a good Communist). Yes, I know this is an eccentric choice, but I thought it was time for something different...

01. Who is your favourite character from #6? (Women's Armed Police Squad) Rather boringly, my favourite is the main character, Tie Hong, the Rebellious Young Thing who has to learn (the hard way) to think of others. I know you're supposed to disapprove of a lot of the things she does, such as trying to beat people up and developing a huge crush on one of her instructors, not to mention sulking to Olympic standards... but at least she's not a goody-goody, or dull.
02. Who is your least favourite character from #4? (The Archers) Susan Carter for being so unthinkingly noxious. It would have been Will Grundy until recently, for being so grudging and unfriendly - but just recently he's had cause to be both those things. I'm not great fan of Tom Archer or Brian Aldridge, either.
03. What would a crossover between #1 and #5 include? (Sherlock Holmes, LOTR) I'm sure there's a lot of potential, but the best I can manage right now is that if Holmes had been in Gondor, he would have unmasked Denethor's unauthorised peeping at Mordor and descent into madness much sooner. Preparations for the war would have been a lot more whole-hearted, and Faramir's life would never have been in danger.
04. Who is your favourite ship from #1? (Sherlock Holmes) Er... something canon like Sir Henry Baskerville/Mrs Stapleton? I'm a confirmed non-shipper in this canon above all others - I'm convinced that it's Not The Point.
05. If you were to set one person from #3 and one person from #6 up on a blind date, who would they be? (Enterprise; Women's Armed Police Squad)
Er.... not a match made in heaven, but perhaps
Tie Hong (rebel)/Shran, perhaps - he wouldn't be too bothered by the fact that she wants to beat everyone up, and she would love the fact that Andorians would not only consider her rather stable and placid, but also take her places on spaceships.
Or Archer/Yang Jijun (the goody-goody one who is not only a perfect soldier and a good communist but also really, really nice. In short, she is too good to live and dies in the penultimate episode. This happens in every. single. army soap opera. ever.) They're both the hero of the story; they both appreciate heroics and slightly pointless Grand Gestures; they're both reasonably good-looking and unattached, so why not? If he breaks the Prime Directive hard enough, she might even get to live...
06. If you could meet one person from #4 and spend the day with them, who would it be, and what would you do? (The Archers) I'd rather stick pins in my eyes, to be honest. If I had to choose someone, I suppose Clarrie Grundy would be quite good company, and I could at least guarantee a good dinner (if we get on, she might even crack into Eddie's contraband cider - who knows?). Hardly my dream date, but she seems like a nice lady, and I bet she knows far more about the dirty little secrets of the Enclave than ever makes it onto the radio.
07. If you could change one thing about #2's plotline, what would you change? (Harry Potter) I would have Remus and Tonks live. Or if they did die, let it be in a way that gives them a chance to have an enormous emo deathbed scene. This was a potentially lovely and interesting relationship that could have used a lot more airtime than it ever got, in my opinion.
08. Explain a relationship between two people (not necessarily romantic) from fandom #5, and why you like the relationship between them. (LOTR) This is what comes of chosing things really blind - I don't think interpersonal relationships is always this book's strength.
Gollum's relationship with Frodo is interesting - most of the time it seems to be more to do with jealousy of Sam or wanting the Ring than any personal affection, but just sometimes we get glimmers of blossoming trust, that always seem to get crushed.
09. If the lead characters from #1 and #3 were both drowning, and you could only save one, who would it be? (Sherlock Holmes, Enterprise) Holmes, no contest. If I let Archer drown, large sections of Starfleet would probably consider that I was doing them a favour. And the Vulcan High Command would give me a medal.
10. If you were able to add a new character, any kind of character you wanted, to the storyline for #6, what would the character be like and what would their role be? (Women's Armed Police Squad) I would like to add a character who's utterly surreal and out of place to this story - as, although it's great fun to watch in a mindless way, most of the characters are straight from Central Casting, and something random would really bring them all to life. I'd like to put in something completely off the wall, so I'm going to go for Doraemon, who befriends Token Poor Peasant Who Suffers in Silence Geng Juhua, and showers her with amazing gifts from the future. Poor Geng Juhua deserves a bit of happiness, and it would also drive Patronising Rich Kid Sha Xueli round the twist with thwarted envy, which would be fun as well.
11. What happens in your favourite episode of show #2? (Harry Potter) How long have you got? A current favourite is the scene in Book 6 where Dumbledore unearths Slughorn from his lair. I also love the moment when Hagrid breaks down the door on the island in the middle of the sea in Book 1.
12. If you could kill off one of the characters of #1, who would it be and how would you do it? (Sherlock Holmes) People die in Sherlock Holmes all the time - how am I supposed to do this in a memorable way? Untraceable poisons from vicious tribes in the Andes is always a good 'un, if a little lacking in originality.
13. If you got the chance to visit the set for either show #3 or show #5, which would you choose? (Enterprise, LOTR) I'd be pretty happy to see either, but I think I'd probably go for Enterprise, as I'm a sucker for space, and I would very much like to sit in the Captain's chair.
14. So, I saved the best question for last. If you could date anyone from any of these fandoms, which fandom and which person? Well, nobody from The Archers or the army soap opera, for certain! I've always had a soft spot from Malcolm Reed in Enterprise, though I suspect a lot of this is due to indignation over the stupid way his superior officers treat him - in real life I suspect he'd be a bit of a twit. Dr Phlox strikes me as one of those ordinary-looking, rather plump males who can show a girl a really good time when the fit takes him (I just wrote that didn't I... I knew memes rot your brain!), but hardly my type (she hastens to add). Or I could spend an angsty evening comparing poetry with Frodo Baggins, perhaps. Film!Boromir is very decorative, but I can't imagine what we'd talk about... Not that it makes any difference as I am very happily spoken for, thanks ever so. (and even if I wasn't, I would still probably pretend to be in order to get out of having to go on this date.)
02. Who is your least favourite character from #4? (The Archers) Susan Carter for being so unthinkingly noxious.
