"hatched from an egg" *snorfle* Watson gets to be lovingly snide!
I was a little surprised that Watson did not instantly exclaim at such an outlandish name as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but I saw that he took it to mean "fakirs and conjurers", and remembered what century we were in.
I like how Marchmont was delighted at receiving such a letter; it feels good to know that. Being a Holmes, he was probably already well aware of his special attributes, but it also points to how Muggle-borns receiving such letters most likely just feel an intense relief of everything making sense now, versus shock and "Huh? Wazzat?"
"then they will snuff out your memories, or even your life" - I could _hear_ Holmes's voice hissing vehemently. VERY interesting take on wizardry, which I can only imagine happened at some point after Marchmont got his letter, and not before... I wonder if Holmes ever felt it should have come to him?
Oh my - luminous cattle! I can see that! I like your Marchmont. Not to pigeonhole him but he seems such a natural leader, a Marauder of sorts yet at the same time far above Marauders.
That "even permitted" to attend their mother's funeral as a "special concession" - does Holmes really think wizardkind are such beasts?
Ah. He does. That Black. I'd like to know just what he erased from the father's memory. Why tell him anything at all only to modify most of it? Unless that was a different kind of curse and the father can't remember through shock. Though at least he could remember that his son had died...hmm. Well, I sure bet there's something more to it, after all, Holmes couldn't see and couldn't hear that much. Oh, I love this mystery! Sinking down into it now!
Ah - there's that snap, that little bite, that disdainful sniff as Holmes says "no magical letter ever came for either of us." Yes, Holmes would much prefer to live by his wits...given no alternative. He has a right to be proud of himself, but oh, for a helping hand when he could have used it!
Goodness. This is glorious. Bravo! Wonderful chapter.
